Company Description

In 1902, Lou Holland moved from Rochester, NY to Kansas City, MO to start a new job with a local engraving company. In 1916, Mr. Holland decided to start his own engraving business - Holland Nameplate & Engraving Co.

The money to start the company was raised by "passing the hat" among interested advertising agencies. Originally, the new company was located on the top floor of the Western Auto Building (21st & Grand), where they produced printing plates for Western Auto Catalogs and other national publications.

Mr. Holland was very active in public service. He served as President of the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World. Mr. Holland was a close friend of Harry Truman, and during WWII was appointed Deputy Chairman of the War Production Board, and Chairman of the Smaller War Plants Corporation.

In the late 40's, the company moved to 422 Admiral Blvd. Mr. Holland 's brother William, and his son Garrett, continued to operate the business for another 30 years.

After a difficult operational period, Bill Schumacher acquired Holland Nameplate in 1982. Mr. Schumacher's metallurgical expertise and business acumen allowed the company to re-establish itself as a major manufacturer of identification products.

J. Michael Stradinger purchased Holland Nameplate in 1995 and subsequently changed the company name to Holland 1916. Mr. Stradinger has built a team of highly knowledgeable professionals. This team broadened the company's product offering and improved its systems. In 2002, Holland received ISO 9001:2000 certification from DNV. During the 4 th Qtr of 2002, Holland moved to a new state of the art facility in North Kansas City, MO. In conjunction with the move, Holland upgraded its equipment. These changes significantly improved quality, increased capacity and shortened delivery times.

Holland 1916 enjoys an excellent reputation in the industry, with both Mr. Schumacher and Mr. Stradinger serving as Presidents of the National Association of Graphic and Product Identification Manufacturers, Inc. The "Nameplate Industry Standards" book was written and edited at Holland. After a long and proud history, Holland continues to pursue its goals of continued growth and profitability.
