Instahot or " tankless water heaters" as they have come to be known now have been around since World War 2. They have been used in Europe in several different configurations since then. Now days tankless's water heater are the only type used there. The only difference has been that they would use a unit for every point. Because of the configuration of those units were not compatible in the U.S market . To retrofit a house with the European design it would have been a large investment that would have taken years to pay back in savings if it ever did. Also the electrical systems and water pressure were different in Europe then in the U.S. so even trying to use them as "Point-of-Use" would not have worked. Two problems immerged. One was to build a tankless water heater that would be able to be fitted into an exciting house. (In other words you take ONE tank out and replace it with ONE tankless water heater.) The second was to build a unit that would work on the U.S. electrical system and withstand the larger pressure requirements needed to operate safely.
